Whatever you call it, you don’t want to get it. This disease can eventually lead to many serious dental problems and unnecessary expenses. Preventing gum disease in 3 easy steps is beneficial information for you and your whole family!
Proper Brushing and Flossing Daily
Proper brushing means thoroughly reaching all parts of your mouth on the inside and outside of your teeth at least twice a day. It means spending at least 30 seconds on each quadrant and brushing right up to the gumline. Proper brushing also means using a soft bristle brush and replacing it at least every 3 months.
This is necessary so we can remove all the plaque (bacteria) that has built up on our teeth and near the gumline since the last brushing. If the plaque is not removed, it can turn into a hard tartar, which is much more difficult to remove.
Flossing is sometimes considered an afterthought, but it is just as important as brushing. Removing food particles and debris after brushing is the final step for a clean mouth. Many people find it difficult to floss, especially in the back of the mouth. Use a flossing device such as a waterpik to reach those areas.
Gingivitis is the first sign of periodontal disease. The gums become inflamed, red, and bleed easily. If not treated quickly with proper brushing, bacteria begins to fill pockets between your teeth and gums. If left untreated, the inflammation will ultimately cause the loss of bone, tissue, and even whole teeth. Gum disease and inflammation can also begin to affect other areas of the body if they are not addressed.
So how does eating healthy help to prevent gum disease? Sugar laden foods just add to the sugars and acid in our mouth. This doesn’t mean you can never eat a cookie or have a piece of cake again, just do it in moderation and as part of your meal, not in between. Reduce consumption of sugary drinks, and opt for fresh fruits, raw vegetables, legumes, and nuts in place of less healthy alternatives.
Calcium rich fortified milk and cheeses also help to keep teeth and bones strong. The chewing action of eating celery, carrots, and apples helps to clean the mouth of plaque.
