What You Should Know Before Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign is a great alternative to metal braces. It gives you the opportunity to straighten your teeth without being self-conscious about those metal contraptions everyone used to wear. Before you make the decision about moving forward, here is what you should know before Invisalign treatment.

Don’t Expect Instant Gratification

The treatment process works slowly and steadily. If you have reasonable expectations, this will be a game changer for you. The duration of the Invisalign treatment depends on the amount of misalignment you have. Manhattan Dental Arts will be able to give you an estimate of how long the treatment will continue until your teeth are in their perfect alignment.

Expect To Wear The Aligners Most Of The Time

You will be wearing the clear plastic aligners for 22 hours per day. That means sleeping with them and only removing them for the following situations:

  • To brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day
  • To eat meals
  • To drink any liquids other than water

Be sure to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in your mouth after eating. No food should be between your teeth.

Be Careful Not To Stain The Aligners

Unfortunately, it is easy to leave stains on your invisible aligners. That includes coffee, dark colored drinks, red wine, tea, acidic or any colored sugary drink. Stains are difficult to remove once they become discolored.

Remove the aligner if you wish to drink these beverages, brush your teeth before putting them back in, and this will keep them sparkling clean. Remember the whole point is that they are mean to be invisible.

Smoking Is Discouraged

Not only is it unhealthy for you to smoke, it will leave a stain on the clear aligners that will not come out. If you must smoke, take the aligner out and brush your teeth before putting them back on.

Expect Your Teeth To Feel Sensitive

The aligners are putting pressure on your teeth to slowly move them into a better position. While this is continuing to progress, you may find you have some sensitivity. This is nothing to be concerned about, just know that it will occur.

You can also expect to have some occasional stinging in your gums from the pressure of the aligners. Talk with Manhattan Dental Arts about ways to reduce any discomfort.

Keep Your Aligners Clean

It is important to clean your aligners at least every other day. Use a mild cleanser, allow them to soak, rinse, and dry them before re-inserting them after dinner or at bedtime. You can also use a little bleach and water and brush them inside and out.

Lipstick Stains

It is important for you to know that lipstick will leave stains which will not come off. If you wear lipstick all the time, be aware of this before you decide to have Invisalign treatment. You can wear some natural colorless gloss or balm.

Teens, adults, and seniors are all candidates for Invisalign. Consider all of these pros and cons before deciding to have an Invisalign treatment.
